Almost fill a seed tray with moist seed compost. Sow seeds thinly over the surface, and lightly cover them with a little more compost. Place in the warmth 10-15°C, and keep moist. Higher temperatures may inhibit germination.

Keep seedlings in a light position, but shade from direct sunlight. When large enough to handle, transplant 5cm apart into trays of potting compost

Gradually accustom plants to outside conditions for 2-3 weeks before planting out. Allow 15cm between plants.

January – September, depending on when sown. Although best grown as biennials, which flower the year after sowings made May – August, pansies can also be treated as half hardy annuals to flower the same year from sowings made February - May.
