Tips & Advice:
Sowing Indoors
Sow seeds singly in module trays to avoid root disturbance, about 1cm deep and keep on a warm windowsill, around 15-20°C. Water regularly.
Growing On / Planting Out
Gradually acclimatise to outdoor conditions before planting out after the risk of frost has passed. Plant into fertile, moist, but well-drained soil in a sunny, sheltered spot 30cm apart, avoiding root disturbance. Alternatively, plant three in containers at least 40cm in diameter.
Sowing Outdoors
Sow outdoors from early to mid-summer, thinly, in a pre-watered drill about 1.5cm deep. Carefully thin to 30cm apart when large enough to handle. The thinnings are tasty in salads. For baby bulbs, you can choose to grow more closely together.
Aftercare
Regular watering is essential for the development of the bulbs. Do not let the soil, or containers, dry out.
Advice
Fennel dislikes heavy soils and cold conditions. Baby bulbs can be harvested in a few weeks; mature bulbs take about 3 months. Leaves can also be used for flavouring.
